Cubs Trade For Kevin Gregg, Wood Not In Future

Filed under: MLB, Sports; Tagged as: , ,

The Chicago Cubs completed a trade with the Florida Marlins to acquire closer Kevin Gregg. Gregg finished the 2008 season with a 7-8 record, 3.41 ERA and 29 saves. His 9 blown saves led the Major Leagues in 2008. Gregg had an atrocious month of August when his ERA was over 10.00 and he lost his closer job. In every other month, Gregg’s ERA was under 2.00.

The Marlins received 21-year fire-baller Jose Ceda from the Cubs. Ceda finished 4-3 with a 3.83 ERA in starts on the Single-A and Double-A level for the Cubs farm system.

The trade for Gregg meant the end of the Cubs relationship with long-time pitcher Kerry Wood. Wood had played his entire career with the Cubs and finished the 2008 season with 34 saves. He was 5-4 with a 3.26 ERA. Wood was looking for a long-term 3 or 4 year deal, and the Cubs were not willing to commit to such a deal given his injury history.
