The Tennessee Titans defeated the Jacksonville Jaguars 24-14 to move to 10-0 on the 2008 NFL season. For the 2nd year in a row, the NFL has had a team reach the 10-0 mark (the New England Patriots completed the regular season undefeated last year and went to 18-0 through the AFC playoffs before losing to the New York Giants in the Super Bowl). The Titans trailed 14-3 at halftime in Jacksonville and never really seemed “in sync” during the game’s first 30 minutes. The Jags’ Maurice Jones-Drew had paced the rushing attack for Jacksonville with 2 touchdown runs in the 2nd quarter.
However, the Titans came out blazing in the 3rd quarter. Quarterback Kerry Collins connected with Brandon Jones on a 13-yard TD pass to cut the lead to 14-10. The Titans took the lead for good on another Kerry Collins TD pass – this time a 56-yarder to Justin Gage. The Titans put the game on another Collins to Gage 38-yard touchdown pass in the 4th quarter, giving the Titans a 24-14 edge that would stay the final score. Collins had a mediocre completiong percentage of 13 for 23, but he did throw for 230 yards and 3 touchdowns.
The Titans defense shut down the Jags offense in the 2nd half. The Jags did not score in the game’s final 30 minutes and Jags’ Quarterback David Garrard finished the day 13 of 30 passing with 1 interception.
The Titans need 6 more wins to match the Patriots undefeated 2007 season record. Will they do it? Stay tuned…

The Chicago Cubs completed a trade with the Florida Marlins to acquire closer Kevin Gregg. Gregg finished the 2008 season with a 7-8 record, 3.41 ERA and 29 saves. His 9 blown saves led the Major Leagues in 2008. Gregg had an atrocious month of August when his ERA was over 10.00 and he lost his closer job. In every other month, Gregg’s ERA was under 2.00.
The Marlins received 21-year fire-baller Jose Ceda from the Cubs. Ceda finished 4-3 with a 3.83 ERA in starts on the Single-A and Double-A level for the Cubs farm system.
The trade for Gregg meant the end of the Cubs relationship with long-time pitcher Kerry Wood. Wood had played his entire career with the Cubs and finished the 2008 season with 34 saves. He was 5-4 with a 3.26 ERA. Wood was looking for a long-term 3 or 4 year deal, and the Cubs were not willing to commit to such a deal given his injury history.

Chicago Cubs Manager Lou Pinella was named the NL Manager of the Year. Pinella garnered 15 of 32 first-place votes and edged out Philadelphia Phillies Manager Charlie Manuel to win the award. It was the 3rd time Pinella won the award, but the first time for him in the NL. He had previously won the award with the Seattle Mariners of the American League in 1995 and 2001.
Pinella led the Cubs to a 97-win season. The Cubs won the NL Central Division for the 2nd time with Pinella as Manager. But for the 2nd straight season, much to the dismay of Cubs fans all across the globe, the Cubs were swept out of the playoffs in the 1st round.
Pinella earned a $100,000 bonus for winning the award – here’s to 2009, Lou!

The San Francisco Giants Tim Lincecum won the National League Cy Young Award. Lincecum, standing at only 5′11″ and 160 pounds, won 23 of the 32 first place ballots and beat out Brandon Webb of the Arizona Diamondbacks and Johann Santana of the New York Mets. Lincecum finished the season 18-5 on one of the worst teams in all of MLB baseball. Lincecum had a sparkling 2.62 ERA and he struck out a Major-League best 265 batters. Although Lincecum has added a few pitches to his rotation, his best pitch is his 97 MPH fastball.
