arod_varitekThe Boston Red Sox have given Jason Varitek until Friday to make up his mind if he is going to stay for one more year for $5 million. The deal also has an option for 2010. The Sox who open up spring training Feb 12 for pitchers and catchers want to know by Friday since he would have to report in by the 12th. Varitek is a two time All-Star who will be 37 in April and did not have the best season last year. In his last 131 games he hit .220 with 13 HR and 43 RBIs. There has not been any interest from other teams and is coming off a four-year $40 million deal. Varitek has spent his entire MLB career with the Red Sox.

Knicks Pistons BasketballWe have now been hearing that Stephon Marbury could go to the Celtics and that they want to sign him bad. He even came out this week and said the rumor are true. Now sources from the Boston Hearld are claiming other wise. The paper is saying that the Celtics are quoted as saying ” absolutely no verbal commitment” has been made with Marbury. Now there is also talk the Miami Heat have him in there sights. Marbury is in his last year of a $21 million contract and is getting paid to hang out. He is not allowed near the Kincks or at any games. Marbury was also approached by the Greek team Olympiacos as they are looking for an replacement for the injured Josh Childress. It doesn’t look like that deal is going to pan out at this time. The Knicks and Marbury still need to work out a deal to release him from his contract.

michael-reddThe Milwaukee Bucks leading scorer will be out for the rest of the year with torn ligaments in his left knee. The Bucks did not need this blow to the team that has already been struggling all season with injuries. The Bucks who are in third place in the Central Division. Before this knee injury Redd missed 14 games with an ankle injury and center Andrew Bogut missed 13 games with back spasms. Redd was averaging 25 points per game in Jan and shooting better than 51 percent from the field. Wednesday night playing Dallas Redd had 27 points, with five 3-pointers with the final score of 133-99. Redd’s knee injury hit Saturday versus Sacramento when he landed awkwardly on teammate Luke Ridnours foot. He had an MRI Sunday which revealed the extent of the injury. There has been talk that the team is looking to make a deal before the trade deadline to make the team more competitive in its push towards the post season.

“We play to win the game.” Herm Edwards own words came back to bite him in the ass, as the Kansas City Chiefs fired Edwards for his lack of results after 3 years on the job in Kansas City. Edwards led the Chiefs to a dismal 15-33 record in 3 seasons at the helm – including the worst 2-year stretch in franchise history when the Chiefs won only a total of 6 games during the 2007 and 2008 NFL seasons. Edwards had 1-year left on his 4-year, $12 million contract. In 5 years with the New York Jets, Edwards compiled a 39-41 record from 2001 through 2005, including a 2-3 record in the playoffs.

Kansas City President and GM Carl Peterson surprisingly resigned in the middle of December 2008. The Chiefs hired former New England Patriots executive Scott Pioli on January 13, 2009, and it took Pioli only 10 days to determine that he was going to let Edwards go. There are rumors swirling that Pioli is trying to lure former Denver Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan to Kansas City to take over the Chiefs top job. Shanahan was both GM and head coach in Denver the last few seasons, and most critics believe that Shanahan’s true strengths lie in his coaching ability. Whether Shanahan is willing to accept a job where he won’t have more control over personnel decisions remains to be seen.

In any event, everyone is still playing to win the games. Good luck, Herm!
