    boston-celtics-injuries

Despite finishing the NBA Season with the 2nd best record in the NBA’s Eastern Conference, the defending champion Boston Celtics were concerned about their chances in the playoffs.  Right before the playoffs started, they got word that Kevin Garnett – their leader and defensive stopper in the middle – would miss at least the 1st round of the NBA playoffs and maybe more.  In the 1st game of the playoffs against the #7 seed Chicago Bulls, rookie guard Derrick Rose burst out onto the NBA playoff scene with an incredible 1st ever playoff game – 36 points, 11 assists, 4 rebounds and 1 steal.  The Bulls upset the Celtics in overtime 105-103 behind Rose and a solid team effort that saw 5 Bulls players score in double-digits.

The Celtics struggled to pull out a 118-115 over the Bulls in Game 2 of the series on Monday night.  Ray Allen hit a game-winning 3-point shot with 2 seconds left in the game to prevent the Bulls from taking a 2-0 lead in the best of 7 series .  But the win did not come without a cost.  Rajon Rondo had the game of the night – 19 points, 16 assists, 12 rebounds and 5 steals – but he did injure his left ankle.  Rondo will not practice on Tuesday or Wednesday to rest the sore ankle, but he will play on Thursday night in Chicago.  Leonard Powe, however, is not so fortunate.  Powe injured his knee on a spin move and could only play 3 more minutes on the bum leg.  Tests on Tuesday revealed a torn ACL and Powe will miss the rest of the 2009 playoffs.

All in all, the Celtics are counting their blessings.  Ray Allen came to life in Game 2, scoring 28 of his 30 points in the 2nd half to help the Celtics pull off the win.  Paul Pierce has yet to bust out in the series -23 points and 7 rebounds on Saturday and 18 points and 8 rebounds on Monday.  Eventually a huge night will come for the Celtics, and when that happens, it could mean the end for this spirited Bulls run.

tylerCycling has been sounding like baseball the last few years with all of the steroid talk. Friday we find out that American cyclist Tyler Hamilton announced his retirement after testing positive for the steroid DHEA. He said he knowingly ingested it in an over the counter herbal antidepressant. This was his second doping offense who tested positive for homologous blood transfusion in 2004 and served a two-year suspension, even as he disputed the test results. It was likely that he faced a eight year to life suspension for this second offense.

Hamilton, said he decided to admit to the violation in order to deal with an ongoing battle with clinical depression that was first diagnosed in 2003. When he bought the supplement called Mitamins Advanced Formula for Depression, he was in a “desperate” state triggered when he went off his other medication cold turkey, he said.

The New York Yankees defeated the Cleveland Indians 6-5 for their 1st win on New Yankee Stadium soil.  The Yankees needed 5 home runs to pull off the win.  Johnny Damon and Mark Teixeira homered in the 3rd inning; Melky Cabrera homered in the 4th inning; Robinson Cano homered in the 6th inning; and Derek Jeter’s home run in the bottom of the 8th inning broke up a 5-5 tie and put the Yankees ahead for good.  Although Mariano Rivera gave up 2 hits in the 9th inning to make things interesting, he got it done by striking out Mark DeRosa to end the game.  DeRosa had been 2 for 4 with 2 RBI’s and 2 runs scored.

The Yankees are now 6-5 on the season – the 1st time they have more wins than losses on the young 2009 campaign.

The Chicago Bulls made it into the playoffs Wednesday night, but this could not be the best thing for the team. There are the seventh seed and are going to have to take on the Boston Celtics. The Bulls are going to need all the help they can get and they are getting some, we learned today the Kevin Garnett could be out the whole post season. Since we are in Chicago we are hoping the Bulls can go as far as possible in the playoffs. We also know this is a long shot, but hey crazier things have happened. As always if you are looking for NBA playoff tickets check out.

Red Sox Home OpenerThe Boston Red Sox right hand-er Daisuke Matsuzaka was put on the 15-day DL today with a mild right shoulder strain. Dice K did not make it to the second inning Tuesday night against the Athletics, giving up five runs and five hits on 43 pitches. “Our biggest concern is to keep him healthy and productive,” Terry Francona said. “At the moment, it doesn’t seem like we’re there with him. We want him to be able to be Dice-k.”

    White Sox Tigers Baseball

Jermaine Dye and Paul Konerko hit back-to-back home runs in the 2nd inning of the White Sox 10-6 win over the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday.  It marked the 300th career home run for each player.  Pretty cool way to reach the 300 home run plateau with your own teammate matching the same feat on consecutive at-bats.

The White Sox brought out the whipping sticks against the Tigers during their 2009 home opener at Comerica Park.  Dye finished the day going 3 for 5 with 1 RBI and 2 runs scored.  Konerko finished the day going 4 for 5 with 4 RBI’s and 2 runs scored.  Carlos Quentin hit 2 home runs of his own in the 4th and 6th innings and had 4 RBI’s and 3 runs scored.  Every White Sox player who took an at-bat got a hit.

The White Sox were fortunate to have the big offensive outburst, as starter Gavin Floyd struggled for much of his 5 innings.  Floyd needed 98 to pitch enough innings to qualify for the win.  He gave up 6 earned runs on 5 hits and 7 walks.

Kenny Perry was so close to having a green jacket at the age of 48, but it was just not meant to be. On the 16th hole he had an amazing tee shot that got within inches of him being able to get an ace. He did not make the shot. In a sudden-death playoff with Angel Cabrera and Chad Campbell, Cabrera was the winner. Perry who has played better then anyone else has won four tournaments and lost two in playoffs. He was picked for last years Ryder Cup team even with not earning one penny from any other major championship.
