Former Nats Pitcher Joel Hanrahan Earns Win in Nats 11-10 “Home” Win in Houston

It was an odd ending to the Nats 11-10 win over the Astros on Thursday in Houston.

First – the Nats earned the “walk-off” win on an error by Miguel Tejada even though the Nats were playing on the road in Houston – the game was being finished after it had been suspended by rain on May 5th in Washington DC.

Second – Joel Hanrahan earned the win for the Nationals by pitching a scoreless top of the 11th in Houston before the rain postponed the tie game.  The strange thing is, the Nats traded Hanrahan to the Pirates back on June 30th for Nyjer Morgan (more about him later).  Hanrahan was actually in Philadelphia on an off-day after the Pirates had just played 3 games in Houston against the Astros.  Hanrahan picked up his 1st win of the season.  Hanrahan had this to say:  “It’s pretty funny.  It feels pretty good in the situation that we’re in.  Houston is a team in our division and we gained ground.”  Hanrahan had been 0-3 on the season before being credited with the Nationals win.

Thrid – Nyjer Morgan, who came over from the Pirates in the trade for Hanrahan, pinch-ran for Elijah Dukes in the bottom of the 11th inning on Thursday – you see Dukes had been optioned to the minor leagues since the May5th suspended game.  Morgan eventually scored the winning run for the Nationals on Tejada’s error.

Pretty random stuff.  Even with the win, the Nationals are 25-59 and they trail the 1st pace Phillies in the NL East by 20.5 games.  Not good.
