The Good – – Drew Brees & The Bad – Jay Cutler

    Lions Saints Football

Wow – there were some good outings on Sunday, but none was as spectacular as Drew Brees of the New Orleans Saints.  And as for bad outings, Jay Cutler took the cake…

The Good – Drew Brees – 26 of 34 for 358 yards.  He threw for 6 touchdowns, against just 1 pick, and he completed over 75% of his passes.  All good for a phenomenal 137.0 passer rating. Brees even connected twice with tight end Jeremy Shockey twice – it was Shockey’s 1st and 2nd touchdown receptions since being traded from the Giants to the Saints before the start of the 2008 NFL season.  The Saints won 45-27, and despite giving up 27 points on defense, there are high hopes in New Orleans that the high octane offense will keep leading the team to victory throughout the long season.

The Bad – Jay Cutler.  Cutler had to make his Bears debut against the arch-rival Packers at the very unfriendly Lambeau Field in Green Bay.  Not easy.  But no one expected as bad a performance as this.  17 of 36 for 277 yards.  Cutler threw 4 interceptions, the last of which sealed the Bears’ fate with just a minute left in the game. Cutler did throw one TD pass to Devon Hester on a nice fade that cut the Packers lead to 10-9, but he completed only 47% of his passes and his passer rating was an embarrassing 43.2.  The Bears gave up 2 1st round draft picks to acquire Cutler, and although he doesn’t have the best set of receivers in his arsenal, he needs to play better than this.  With upcoming tough games (Steelers at home; Seahawks on the road), if we see more outings like, we may start to hear the boo-birds at Soldier Field very soon…
