Wow – talk about an upset. Juan Martin del Potro (the #6 seed) upset #1 seed Roger Federer in 5 sets to claim the 2009 U.S. Open Men’s Tennis Championship. Unbelievable – one of the greatest tennis upsets of all time.
Federer had won 5 straight US Open titles in Flushing Meadows and a string of 40 straight matches. Federer – who owns the most Grand Slam titles of any player in tennis history – was just 2 points away from the match in the 4th set. But Federer lost control of his serve and del Potro continued to rack up forehand winner after forehand winner – 37 total – en route to the 5-set upset. Del Potro battled back to win the 4th set tie-breaker 7-6 (7-4) and then cruised through the 5th set, winning easily 6-2. Beating Rafael Nadal in the semi-finals was a great accomplishment, but finishing it off with a win over the best player in tennis was a dream come true. Del Potro had this to say about the win – “When I would have a dream, it was to win the U.S. Open, and the other one is to be like Roger. One is done.”
Roger Federer will likely remain the #1 seed for the rest of the 2009 tennis season, but we might have to add a 3rd name to the top 3 players in tennis today – Federer, Rafael Nadal & del Potro…
