Wow – talk about an upset.  Juan Martin del Potro (the #6 seed) upset #1 seed Roger Federer in 5 sets to claim the 2009 U.S. Open Men’s Tennis Championship.  Unbelievable – one of the greatest tennis upsets of all time.

Federer had won 5 straight US Open titles in Flushing Meadows and a string of 40 straight matches.  Federer – who owns the most Grand Slam titles of any player in tennis history – was just 2 points away from the match in the 4th set.  But Federer lost control of his serve and del Potro continued to rack up forehand winner after forehand winner – 37 total – en route to the 5-set upset.  Del Potro battled back to win the 4th set tie-breaker 7-6 (7-4) and then cruised through the 5th set, winning easily 6-2.  Beating Rafael Nadal in the semi-finals was a great accomplishment, but finishing it off with a win over the best player in tennis was a dream come true.  Del Potro had this to say about the win – “When I would have a dream, it was to win the U.S. Open, and the other one is to be like Roger.  One is done.”

Roger Federer will likely remain the #1 seed for the rest of the 2009 tennis season, but we might have to add a 3rd name to the top 3 players in tennis today – Federer, Rafael Nadal & del Potro…

It was a match for the ages as Roger Federer defeated American Andy Roddick in a record Men’s Wimbledon Finals.  The final score – 5-7, 7-6, 7-6, 3-6, 16-14.  The 77 games played by the 2 competitors was a record for a 5-set match.  The 16-14 5th set score was the highest score ever in a 5th set Wimbledon match.  The 30 games played in the 5th set was also the most games ever played in a set.  Federer had 50 aces in the match – a personal record for him.  Shockingly, Federer never even broke Roddick once until that 77th game that gave him the win.  Roddick had broken Federer twice during the match.

Federer became the game’s greatest player ever – winning a record 15th Grand Slam title. Pete Sampras previously held the record with 14 Grand Slam Titles.  Sampras and legendary tennis players Bjorn Borg and Rod Laver were on hand to congratulate Federer at the end of the match.

Roger Federer defeated 23rd ranked Robin Soderling in straight sets on Sunday afternoon (6-1, 7-6 (7-1), 6-4) to capture his 1st ever French Open Title.  The French Open win gave Federer a career Major Championship Grand Slam, becoming only the 5th player to win all 4 major events – The Australian Open, The French Open, Wimbledon and the U.S. Open.  Federer also tied Pete Sampras with the most major championship victories at 14.  Andre Agassi – a career Grand Slam winner himself – handed over the French Open trophy to Federer and had this to say:  “It ends the discussion of where he fits in the history of the game.  This is going to mean so much to him, to have that hole filled.  I think it will change his life.”

Federer benefited from his nemesis – #1-ranked Rafael nadal – being eliminated from French Open competition earlier in the tournament.  Nadal had defeated Federer in several French Open finals matches leading up to this past weekend.

Fortunately, a crazed fan running up to Federer during a break in the action in the 2nd set didn’t unnerve Federer too much.  The man wore a red shirt and carried a red and blue flag and tried to put a red hat on the sitting Federer.  Federer was frightened by the incident:  “I didn’t know exactly what happened.  All of a sudden I heard the crowd, and I looked over and he jumped over the fence or something.  That gave me a fright, just like seeing him so close right away.”  It did throw him off his game a little, as he lost 3 straight points and Soderling’s serve, but he settled down the rest of the set and finished off Soderling in the tie-breaker to go up 2 sets to none.  The rest was history.

#7 Svetlana Kuznetsova defeated #1 Dinara Safina in straight sets on Saturday to capture the French Open Women’s title.  She won 6-4, 6-2 as Kuznetsova swept the final 4 games to close out the match.  The #1 ranked Safina has had her ranking criticized because she has never won a grand slam event and is now 0-3 in grand slam finals matches.  She committed 7 double-faults and was near tears by the end of today’s match.

On Sunday in the Men’s Franch Open Finals, Roger Federer will be playing in his 4th consecutive French Open Finals match.  If Federer wins on Sunday, it wouold be his 1st French Open title and he would become only the 6th player ever to win all 4 Grand Slam titles.  It would also be Federer’s 14th major title, which would tie him with Pete Sampras for the most major title wins ever.  One thing going for him – he does not have to face his clay court nemesis Rafael Nadal who was ousted from the tournament.
