The Atlanta Braves have signed Derek Lowe for four-years and $60 million. The deal as always is pending a physical exam. The Braves beat out the Mets for Lowe who has been the front running for him the last few weeks. Looks like the Mets will not go for Perez and Wolf or even Brewers Sheets but there has been talk about his health. Lowe, 35, is 126-107 in his career and has played for Boston, Seattle, and LA. The Braves tried to trade Jake Peavy this winter to get A.J. Burnett but the Yankees beat them out.
Rumor has it that Japanese super star pitcher Kensin Kawakami is in Atlanta for a Physical to finalize an agreement with the Braves. Kawakami is the 2004 MVP for the Central League and has won 112 games in 11 seasons. He is regarded as one of the the top free agents from Japan. Kawakami 33 was 9-5 last year and missed several weeks because of back strain. The Braces who have lost Smoltz and Hampton could also loss Hudson so Kawakami would be much needed for the team.
Rumors out today that the Red Sox are in talks with John Smoltz for a $5.5 million deal with $5 million in incentives. Smoltz, 41, has pitched 708 games for the Braves and was out last season after shoulder surgery. There have been people close to Smoltz saying he is making an amazing recovery. This year the Braves have lost out trying to sign Jake Peavy and AJ Burnett, losing Smoltz could be a big hit to the team. For the Red Sox this could be a big move singing Smoltz would give them six great starters and Smoltz could help out if they run into injuries or pitchers need rest. This also gives the Red Sox the option to trade one of there super star pitchers if needed. Braves better get moving to land some players or this year is going to a rough season for Atlanta.
