The Chicago Bulls made it into the playoffs Wednesday night, but this could not be the best thing for the team. There are the seventh seed and are going to have to take on the Boston Celtics. The Bulls are going to need all the help they can get and they are getting some, we learned today the Kevin Garnett could be out the whole post season. Since we are in Chicago we are hoping the Bulls can go as far as possible in the playoffs. We also know this is a long shot, but hey crazier things have happened. As always if you are looking for NBA playoff tickets check out.
Kevin Garnett has been out for 13 games with a knee injury, but was back on Friday night. Garnett scored 10 points before sitting out the fourth, this was a precaution so he could rest his knee. The Celtics still won the game 80-77, the Celtics have now won four of its last five against the Spurs following an 18-game losing streak. Another big game for Rajon Rondo who had 16 points and 12 assists, this his third straight double-digit game. Tony Paker helped the spurs with 25 points.

Well it definitely lived up to the hype. For the 2nd time this NBA season, the Lakers ended a double-digit Celtics winning streak, this time on the Celtics own home court in Boston. It was a back and forth game all night long, with the Lakers leading by 3 points after the 1st quarter and the Celtics leading by 1 and 4 points, respectively, after the 2nd and 3rd quarters. In the end, it took 2 free throws by Lamar Odom and 2 missed shots by Paul Pierce and Ray Allen in order for the Lakers to preserve the win.
Kobe Bryant led the Lakers with 26 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists. He also hit three 3-point shots in the final quarter to help the Lakers tie the game. Pau Gasol also stepped up the plate in a big way – Gasol scored 24 points and grabbed 14 rebounds. Lamar Odom scored 20 points and had 6 rebounds, while Derek Fisher also chipped in 13 points, 5 assists and 3 steals.
For the Celtics, Rajon Rondo just missed a triple-double in one of his best performances of the year – 16 points, 12 assists and 8 rebounds. Ray Allen led the Celtics with 22 points. The Celtics dynamic duo – Paul Pierce (21 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists) and Kevin Garnett (16 points and 6 rebounds in only 33 minutes) had efficient nights, but they weren’t enough to lift the Celtics over the Lakers.
The Lakers (40-9) are now 5-0 on their current road trip and now have a percentage points lead over the Celtics (41-10) for the best record in the NBA. The Celtics have a 1/2 game lead over the Cleveland Cavaliers for the top spot in the Eastern Conference and take on the New York Knicks tonight at Madison Square Garden. Will a Celtic player be able to score 50 points tonight to make it 3 games in a row in which a Knicks’ opponent scores 50 points? Stay tuned.
The Boston Celtics needed a 3-point shot from Ray Allen at the buzzer to beat the Philadelphia 76ers in Philly on Tuesday night. Trailing by 2, Allen nailed the 3-pointer to snatch the win from the 76ers. Allen finished the game with 23 points, while Paul Pierce chipped in 29 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists. The Celtics played without Kevin Garnett for the 2nd straight game – he is battling the flu. The Celtics are 41-9 and sit atop the Eastern Conference with a 1.5 game lead over the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Speaking of the Cavs, the Cavs led the Toronto Raptors 37-15 after 1 quarter and cruised to a 101-83 victory. Lebron James proved his worth again – 33 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists. Mo Williams also turned in a solid night with 16 points and 9 assists. The Cavs are now 23-0 at home and 38-9 overall. They are tied with the Los Angeles Lakers for the 2nd best record in the NBA.
The three super stars had another great game for Boston on Friday. Kevin Garnett scored 22, Paul Pierce had 20, and Ray Allen scored 14 landing Boston with an 86-78 win over Detroit. This is Bostons 10th straight win and they took the last seven games by double digits including three wins by more then 20 points.
“It was kind of nice,” Doc Rivers said. “I thought our execution down the stretch was phenomenal, as good as we’ve had all year.” This is the Celtics second 10-game streak this season, the last time they had two streaks like this was the 1985-86 season when it won its 17th title. Ealry in the season the Celtics had a 19 game streak and are now 39-9 with the No 1 record. Detroit’s Allen Iverson scored 19 points and this moved him past Charles Barkley for 16th place on the NBA’s career scoring list. Boston did have Kendrick Perkins ejected after he knocked down Jason Maxiell with a hard foul.
We have now been hearing that Stephon Marbury could go to the Celtics and that they want to sign him bad. He even came out this week and said the rumor are true. Now sources from the Boston Hearld are claiming other wise. The paper is saying that the Celtics are quoted as saying ” absolutely no verbal commitment” has been made with Marbury. Now there is also talk the Miami Heat have him in there sights. Marbury is in his last year of a $21 million contract and is getting paid to hang out. He is not allowed near the Kincks or at any games. Marbury was also approached by the Greek team Olympiacos as they are looking for an replacement for the injured Josh Childress. It doesn’t look like that deal is going to pan out at this time. The Knicks and Marbury still need to work out a deal to release him from his contract.
The Boston Celtics won their 8th straight game, crushing the Mavericks 124-100 at home. The Celtics raced out to a 38-23 1st quarter lead, and then outscored the Mavs 36-24 in the 2nd quarter to take an insurmountable 27 point halftime lead. Ray Allen, Kevin Garnett, and Eddie House each scored 23 points for the Celtics. Paul Pierce battled foul trouble all night and only scored 8 points – his lowest point total of the 2008-9 NBA season. Jason Terry led the Mavs with 27 points off the bench, while starters Dirk Nowitzki and Josh Howard each scored 18 points.
Hip, Hip Hooray!!!
It took a while, but the Boston Celtics seem to be back on track. After a rough stretch during late December and early January, it looked as if the Boston Celtics might not have what it took to defend their 2007 NBA Championship title. But after the last 7 games, the Celtics have rattled off 7 straight wins to and find themselves sitting atop the Eastern Conference with a 1.5 game lead over each of the Orlando Magic and Cleveland Cavaliers. The Celtics have a 36-9 record and once again have the best record in the NBA.
How did it all happen – it took 4 consecutive losses – 2 to bad teams (Knicks and Bobcats) and 2 to good teams (Rockets and Cavaliers) – to light a fire under the veteran Celtics unit. After that, the Celtics rattled off wins against the Raptors on back-to-back nights, 2 more wins against the New Jersey Nets in a home-and-home series, a home win against Phoenix, and then road wins in the state of Florida on Wednesday and Thursday night this week against the Heat and Magic. The Magic win was the big one – re-establishing them as a team that could compete against the elite teams in the league. Paul Pierce dominated the game against the Magic with 27 points and 10 rebounds. Kevin Garnett chipped in 16 points and 5 rebounds, while Rajon Rondo knocked down 9 points while dishing out 8 assists. The Celtics also got a great night off the bench from Glen Davis – 16 points and 4 rebounds. Most importantly, the Celtics were able to keep Dwight Howard in check – he finished the game with only 11 points, 11 rebounds and 4 turnovers.
Now the test will be to see how the Celtics deal with the success – they have homes games against the Dallas Mavericks and Sacramento Kings, followed by a 1-game road trip to Detroit to play the Pistons. Will the win streak be at 10 by the time they get to Detroit next Friday night? Guess we’ll have to wait and see…
The Cleveland Cavaliers defeated the Boston Celtics 98-83 at home, allowing the Cavs to stay unbeaten at the Quicken Loans Arena during the 2008-9 NBA season – with a perfect 19-0 record. The Cavs now lead the Eastern Conference by 1 game over the Orlando Magic and 1.5 games over the Boston Celtics. The loss continued the spiraling decline of the Celtics, who have now lost 4 games in a row and 8 of their last 10. Their only 2 wins during the last 3 weeks have come at Sacramento and at home against the Wizards – 2 of the worst teams in the NBA.
Lebron James did just about everything himself on Friday night – 38 points on 13-25 shooting. He made 3 3-pointers and all 9 of his free throws. He had 7 rebounds, 6 assists, 4 steals and 3 blocked shots. Most importantly, James hounded Paul Pierce all night long, forcing him into an awful shooting night – just 4 of 15 – and just 11 overall points. The Cavs Anderson Varejao continues to play well in the middle while they wait for Zydrunas Ilgauskas to recover from his ankle injury. Anderson chipped in 14 points and 9 boards for the Cavs.
As for the Celtics, they only had 2 bright spots. Kevin Garnett scored 18 points and grabbed 15 rebounds. Rajon Rondo dished out 13 assists and had 4 steals. Other than that, the Celtics continued to get little help from the bench, and that’s where the Celtics really put teams during their 2007-8 NBA Championship run. It will be interesting to see how Doc Rivers responds with the recent play. This “older” team doesn’t have that big a window – this year and maybe next year – so Rivers, his staff and his players need to right the ship if they expect to bring multiple NBA titles to Beantown.
He hasn’t played in a NBA game in almost a year and he could be the biggest pain in the NBA, but rumor is the Celtics are looking into ways to get Stephon Marbury out of his Knicks contract. This could be easier said then done since all of this depends on Marbury’s ability to negotiate his release from the Kincks. If you have been following Marbury the last few years you will know he is not the smartest NBA player. The Boston Celtics are his first choice if he could become a free agent source close to the team are saying. No one from the Celtics is commenting on the story. It is believed that the team is very concerned after losing Posey and Brown from last years winning team. There have also been rumors Kevin Garnett would not allow the reunion since Marbuty forced a trade to NJ after only three seasons together. Even with this ESPN is reporting that a source in the Celtics said that this season “it will happen”.
Marbury did say at the Knicks-Lakers game that “the team I’m going go to, a lot of people will be shocked.” So if he does go to the Celtics this would be true. Marbury was banned from all contact with the Knicks on Nov. 21 after head coach Mike D’Antoni offered him a chance to start playing following two big trades the Knicks made. Marbury declined of course.
As of today Marbury has refused to give up the $1 million of his $20.8 million salary and now is not willing to give back any of it. The Knicks want him to give up $3 million for the right to choose his next team. Marbury might be taking a big gamble with the way he is handling things with the Knicks. If the Celtics back out or the deal falls apart it is going to be hard for Marbury to find a team willing to put up with his antics. It could cost him more then the $3 million he is keeping right now. I’m sure with the lack or morals in pro sports he will be fine. Teams are willing spend big money on players no matter how bad or dumb they act.
